News on the Future of WWLA
Dear WWLA Community,
Despite our smiles in the photo above, taken in happier times, we share this news with much disappointment and sorrow. As you may have heard, the AB5 legislation went into effect on January 1, limiting the use of independent contractors to specific industries and strict conditions. When Edan formed Writing Workshops Los Angeles twelve years ago in her apartment, she was able to bring on other writers as independent contractors, which allowed us to keep course fees low and give 70-80% of those fees directly to the instructors. We have upheld this model as we've continued to grow, and it has worked well as we served writers in neighborhoods all over Los Angeles.
Unfortunately, we have exhausted possibilities to continue operating under this legislation and with heavy hearts, today we announce the closing of WWLA. Needless to say, we are incredibly saddened by this turn of events.
We are so thankful for and proud of the work of our instructors, and we want you to know that they are still available to you. If you visit our website, you'll see we have updated our Faculty page with instructor specializations and links to their direct email addresses. They will be offering workshops, critiques, and coaching and all you need to do is contact them for details. They will handle your enrollment and payment. We will also maintain our social media accounts at Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and share/retweet classes that they offer. You can also contact us at [email protected] with questions.
We have discussed ways to maintain the WWLA community we value so much and perhaps there will be another WWLA: The Conference in the future. In the meantime, we are so grateful for your support through the years and for sharing your writing with us. We have loved our students and appreciated all of your amazing, important work.
PLEASE KEEP WRITING. We need your voices now more than ever.
Chris & Edan
